The Kanpur administration has given details of the seven pregnant girls who were housed at a state government-run shelter home where 57 inmates tested positive for coronavirus last week.

All of them were pregnant before they were housed in the shelter home and were also medically examined, said authorities.

Of the seven pregnant inmates, five have tested positive for coronavirus which includes one HIV positive patient and another one is infected with Hepatitis.

According to the release issued by the administration, the first pregnant girl was housed at the Kanpur shelter home on November 30, 2019 and was sent there after the medical examination on the recommendation of the district child welfare committee (CWC).

In her case, a chargesheet has already been filed in the court.

The second pregnant inmate was housed there on December 3 last year from Agra after she was sent by CWC. The inmate is a victim of offences committed under the Pocso act. She has also tested coronavirus positive and in her case as well a chargesheet has been filed in the court.

Two girls sent by the CWC in Etah on January 23 and February 23 this year respectively are also pregnant. One has tested coronavirus positive while the other one has tested negative. They are also victims of offences committed under the Pocso Act and in both cases chargesheets have been filed in the court.

Another girl housed at the Kanpur shelter home on December 19, 2019 is from Kannauj. She is a victim of sexual abuse and has tested coronavirus positive. Her case is still pending in the court.

The pregnant girl brought to shelter home from Firozabad district on February 16 this year has also tested positive for coronavirus. She was allegedly abducted and in her case a chargesheet has been filed.

Recently on June 9, a pregnant girl was given shelter at the home after she was sent by the CWC in Kanpur. In her case, the matter is pending in the court and she was sent by the local CWC.

Out of the five Covid-19 positive pregnant girls in the Kanpur shelter home, two have completed over eight months of pregnancy and hence have been admitted at the Covid-19 ward of the district child care hospital.

The shelter home has been sealed for sanitisation.

Therefore out of the seven pregnant inmates, four are victims of the offences under the Pocso act while the remaining three were allegedly abducted or forced to marry.

However, the ADM and regional circle officer have been directed to investigate the matter and file a detailed report.
