Aurangabad: A 27-year-old woman from Aurangabad allegedly cheated several men in Maharashtra on the pretext of marriage. She was arrested on Saturday, following a complaint by one of the victims, police said.

According to the police Vijaya Amrute, a Mukundwadi resident, was arrested on Saturday after a man, identified as Yogesh Shirsath of Sinnar, Nashik, registered a complaint against her, alleging that she fled with his valuables a fortnight after marrying him.

Woman joined racket after losing job

Preliminary inquiries by police revealed that Amrute, who is a married woman with a son, joined the racket involved in duping men on the pretext of marriage due to financial crisis after the pandemic-induced lockdown robbed her and her husband of their jobs.

A police officer said in the past three months, she allegedly duped three men after marrying them. She fled with valuables within days of solemnization of each marriage.

3 marriages in 3 months

According to a report by The Times of India, Amrute first tied the knot with Shirsath and disappeared with ornaments a fortnight after the marriage. She then got married to Sandeep Darade, a resident of Raogad's Karjat. After this, she married a man from western Maharashtra and cheated him too.

The alleged crime came to light only after Shirsath tried searching for Amrute and discovered that she married another man and fled with his valuables too. Following this, he filed a police complaint against her. Based on his complaint, police initiated a probe, leading to Amurte's arrest on Saturday.
