Two women police officers have been suspended in Tamil Nadu's Kallakurichi district over allegation of taking bribe in a case that was registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The police officers - Geetha Rani and Kokila- have been suspended after one of the accused in the case alleged that the two police officers had taken a bribe from her.

WHAT IS THE CASE?

Recently, a 71-year-old man was arrested in a village near Thirukoilur in Kallakurichi district for allegedly raping and impregnating his 15-year-old granddaughter.

The man allegedly forced her to have an abortion to hide his crime and is said to have taken the assistance of two women in getting his granddaughter's abortion done.

The issue came to light when the villagers got information about the incident and informed the village administration officer, who in turn informed the Thirukoilur all-women police.

The man, who has been taking care of his granddaughter and grandson since the demise of his daughter, is alleged to have been sexually harassing his granddaughter for the last three years. The children's father has been in Bengaluru after remarrying.

When the minor girl got pregnant, the man allegedly took the help of Rajamani, a retired nurse and another woman to get the abortion done. The foetus was later buried by the man.

The police had filed a case against the man and two other women involved in the case under several sections of the POCSO Act.

However, one of the women who was involved in the case, Rajamani, allegedly gave bribe to the two women police officers to get her name removed from the chargesheet.

But when Rajamani saw her name appear on the FIR, she approached the District SP and claimed that the two women officers had taken a bribe of Rs 23,500 from her.

Following the accusation, the two police officers have been suspended and a probe has been launched in the case.
